![]() ![]() We're in the middle of all of this ferment right now it will probably all be settled in a hundred years or so, if anybody is still playing guitars.Īlan Carruth wrote: ↑ Thursday 08 April 2021, 19:24 pm Since much of this depends on individual taste and tolerance there's another variable in the equation. Finding out what those ways are can take time. What good is a beautiful sound if nobody can hear it? What good is a powerful sound that nobody wants to listen to? There may be ways to mitigate both undesirable choices and get more of what we want of both tone and power. Going for 'as much sound as possible' tends to skew the character of the sound in ways that are not always good for the music. The less you mess with that structure, the less 'different' the new design will be from the old, both in terms of power and timbre. This is especially true in that changing the way the 'wood' of the top works doesn't alter the way the air inside moves (at least not directly), so the relationships that are 'built in' between the air and the wood differ when the top structure changes. Since the 'standard repertoire' was written around the character of the available instruments it might not work as well when the design has been altered. Much of what we think of as the 'character' of the sound of a guitar depends on how those resonances relate to the pitches the strings are tuned to. If the structure is just as stiff as a 'traditional' top, but weighs less, all of it's resonances will be shifted upward in pitch. Such a drastic structural shift affects the tone, of course. A spruce lattice without any carbon fiber will be heavier, and not quite as stiff, but it still moves in that direction. The top can be reduced to a membrane that's just thick enough to hold up in normal handling, that moves air to produce sound. Smallman's carbon/balsa bracing takes the weight of the bracing itself down as far as possible, while providing all of the necessary stiffness. Overall the structure is lighter, and the limited horsepower of the strings can drive it more easily, producing more sound. The idea of lattice bracing is to shift that balance putting most of the stiffness into the bracing, and reducing the thickness and weight of the top. The top itself tends to weight more than the bracing usually much more. Bracing adds stiffness out of proportion to its mass, and allows for the use of a thinner top that would be needed without it, saving weight. In 'normal' guitar tops the top plate itself provides a fair amount of stiffness to take up the static torque of the strings on the bridge. Well, I don't suppose it's on the order of a 'law of nature', but it's certainly what you'd expect. " Is it essential that wooden lattice are in general more natural sounding but less efficient than carbon lattice bracing?" ![]() ![]() Die Grinders tend to suit professionals rather than DIYers. Die Grinders are often pneumatic, though there are electric models, too. Though a Die Grinder is technically a rotary tool, it is generally not referred to as such. Die Grinders What is a Die Grinder?ĭie Grinders are generally heavy-duty power tools that are both heavier and larger than rotary tools / Dremels. If someone asks you to hand them the Dremel, they probably actually mean a rotary tool.ĭremel is known for and primarily sells rotary tools, but they also make oscillating tools and saws (along with TONS of accessories for every type). With that being said, Dremel is kind of like Kleenex – its name is both a brand and a product. Some other companies that sell rotary tools include Milwaukee, Ryobi, Dewalt, etc. Both refer to tools that use rotary motion, which refers to spinning on a single axis – much like how a fan rotates. Is a rotary tool the same as a Dremel?ĭremel makes rotary tools, but not all rotary tools are Dremels. That’s because they are generally the same tool – more on that below. ![]() Rotary tools are used for all of the same things that Dremels are used for: sanding, scraping, grinding, polishing, routing, etc. They look (and operate) nearly identical to Dremel rotary tools, but without the brand name. Rotary tools consist of a blade, piece of sandpaper, or other attachment on the end of a motor in a housing about the size of an ear of corn. I’ve used my Dremel to cut off nails left over from carpet tack strip in our first house (definitely check out that post – the transformation is STUNNING), cutting plexiglass, and a lot more – it’s an incredibly versatile tool! Rotary Tools What is a Rotary Tool? Because of the huge accessory library that Dremel has cultivated, a single tool can serve a lot of different purposes. What are Dremels Used For?ĭremels can be used for a huge variety of projects: sanding, scraping, grinding, polishing, routing, cutting, removing grout, sharpening, etching, engraving, drilling, cleaning, etc. The company has been the biggest name in the rotary tool market for so long that nearly all rotary tools are referred to as Dremels. The end of a Dremel tool accepts many different attachments, which I’ll discuss more below. Dremel’s rotary tools are about the size of an adult hand and are long and relatively thin – about the same size as an ear of corn. Dremels What is A Dremel?ĭremels are rotary tools (tools that spin on an axis, like a fan) sold by a company of the same name, which is owned by the Robert Bosch Tool Corporation. Common tools that use oscillation as their main form of motion include jigsaws, multi-tools, etc. The movement is still along one axis, but instead of circular motion, it’s more lateral. ![]() ![]() Common tools that use rotary motion include drills, Dremels, Rotary Tools, circular saws, miter saws, etc.įor oscillation, think of the movement as back and forth, up and down, or even vibration. As an avid DIYer, I know the right tool can make any job easier. ![]() ![]() ![]() Unfortunately, I fear the challenge will be dominated by the western world. (Many European languages get 10 numbers all of their own, while all languages of East and Southeast Asia are in 495.) I initiated this challenge of reading books from across the Dewey Decimal categories in an attempt to broaden my horizons and read books about things I wouldn't normally choose to read things about. The 400s are the language category, and the 490s consist of pretty much every non-European language. I read this book as part of my personal challenge to read a book from every ten places of the Dewey Decimal System. I did find it interesting that even though I did learn a number of Chinese characters, I still have no idea how to say any of the words. Initially, I had fun trying to understand the characters and the meanings. Each character is incorporated into a drawing to help illustrate the meaning. So, great book if you want to appreciate the art or use it as a supplement with real Chinese textbooks, but forget about it if you think it will be an “easy” way to learn the language.Ĭhineasy is a book full of Chinese characters and illustrations designed to make learning to read Chinese characters fun and easy. “argument”, p.47) are extremely rare or archaic forms that nobody uses anymore, as more than one of my Chinese friends pointed out to me when they looked inside. ![]() Aside from presenting an extremely small sample of Chinese characters, there's also the fact that they're mostly all traditional forms (most learners of Chinese will want to simplified characters, but even those who are after the traditional characters will find that some of them in here are simplified, as the author/illustrator picks whatever looks best for her purposes). For these purposes, I couldn't recommend this book highly enough, and I've already memorised quite a few of the characters in its pages without applying any real effort.īut you can't possibly rely exclusively on this book to teach you the language. Secondly, if, like me, you are starting out on the nerve-wracking challenge of learning Chinese, this is a great way of demystifying the subject, presenting the logical thought processes behind what may seem like arbitrary and complicated symbols, and giving you an insight into the Chinese mentality. What this is, first and foremost, is an art book, something you can admire not just for the beautiful illustrations on the inside, but also for the way the book was put together and laid out. ![]() This fundamental misunderstanding of the purpose and function of this book can be blamed squarely on the author and publishers for promoting it as such (in TED talks, etc.), taking a charming little concept and hyping it up well out of proportion. 'Chineasy' is not, by any means, a book for learning Chinese, as most of its critics (judging from the negative reviews here and elsewhere) seem to believe. ![]() ![]() ![]() GPU-Z can be used on a computer running Windows 11 or Windows 10. The readers you are trying to reach are on similar teams, and can probably relate. Here are a few strategies for adding the human dimension to the story in these challenging situations. In a B2B business, you may not have permission to highlight individuals within your customer's organization. The best customer success stories follow a specific individual, highlighting their challenges and the steps they took to overcome them. Identify the hero of each story and ask yourself: Is it our company? Our technology? Our customer's brand? Or is it real people solving a business problem? Take a look at all of the customer stories you have right published right now. Pick the right protagonist and fill your story with people. The first, and most important, thing to do when writing your customer stories is this: ![]() These stories have no human faces, no hero that we can root for. For example: " Customer brand works with Company to deploy Product", or " Customer brand reduces customer support costs using Product."Ĭan you identify with a brand? How about a piece of software? Nope, me neither. But again, it's difficult to empathize with a brand. And yes, in the B2B sale, the customer is a business, not an individual. Yes, you should make the customer the focus. You may feel a connection to it, but your readers don't.īrand as hero: More often, you'll find a brand standing in for the protagonist: either the vendor's brand or, better, the customer's brand. Product-name enables IT to respond to issues quickly." The problem, of course, is that a product isn't a person. Here's an example, name obscured to protect the brand: " Product-name proactively monitors the customer's IT environment. Product as hero: It's tempting to make your own product the hero of the story - the thing that saves the day. The two most common protagonist problems are as follows: Many B2B customer stories choose the wrong protagonist, and that makes all the difference. The more powerful the connection to the protagonist, the more compelling we find the tale. ![]() We don't have to love them, but it's hard to get involved in a story when you don't care about anyone in it. The protagonist, or hero, should be someone that holds our interest. ![]() But nearly every definition agrees on the following:Ī story needs a protagonist that the reader/listener can identify with. Hint: Putting a data sheet into a challenge, purchase decision, results format doesn't make it a story.ĭefinitions of story vary you need conflict and resolution, three acts, etc. Having worked in the B2B technology sector for most of my career, I've read my share of deadly boring customer profiles that didn't feel one tiny bit like a story. It's no surprise that you can find a "Customer stories" section on the website of nearly every Business-to-Business (B2B company.) But too often these pieces fall short in one important dimension: the story. These stories can also inspired current customers to expand their usage of the product, learning from the experiences of others. Reading about other customers' successes reminds people of the wisdom of their decision. As I wrote in Subscription Marketing, customer stories are a readily-available method for value nurturing. No one enjoys suffering through a so-called customer story that is transparently self-serving for the vendor, or worse still, a rejiggering of the data sheet into a three-act format.Ĭustomer stories are too important, and too valuable as marketing content, to mess up. Worst of all, we dread having to write an "unattributed" success story, in which we cannot use real names. A well-crafted customer story gives reinforcing "social proof" to a prospect who is on the fence, and turns abstract feature descriptions into real-world examples.īut we don't love them when we cannot speak directly to the customer, or feel bound to make a tale out of what is, at best, a sale.
